Tribute & Message From The Family

Barbara Martin

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies…but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

Barbara Shepherd (Bobbie) Martin, 69 of Narrows, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 30th, 2016.

A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on July 29th, 1947, and was the daughter of the late James Wesley and Jocell Garnett (Jody) Shrader Shepherd. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 43 years, William Wayne (Bill) Martin.

Bobbie dedicated her life to Christ at a very young age. For many years, Bobbie served as a faithful member of Kathleen Memorial United Methodist Church on Wolf Creek, and was an active member of the Wolf Creek Ruritan Club. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, she will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Christie Martin Sowers and her husband, Bennett Sowers, III of Narrows, and Cherie Martin Fenne and her husband, William Fenne of Christiansburg; seven grandchildren, Adrienne Sowers and her partner Lindsey Offnick, Jordan Sowers, Cameron Sowers, and Taylor Sowers, and Katelynn Fenne, Billy Fenne, and Abby Fenne; a great-granddaughter, Hayden Offnick; two brothers, Jerry Shepherd and wife Patty of Tennessee, Eddie Shepherd and wife Heida of North Carolina; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 3rd, 2016 at 11 AM in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Rev. Aaron Atchley officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service Sunday from 6 to 8 PM.

The family is being served by Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, (540) 726-2442, and online at

Condolence & Memory Journal

Dearest Christie & Cherie,

What a precious and beloved woman your dear mother was!
God blessed us all when your mother was born because she was one of the sweetest ladies to ever grace this earth.
I know my own mother(Sonnie) will dearly miss her every day because
she loved Bobbie (& Jody) both so much.
Please know your entire family is in my thoughts and prayers
and know she is at peace.
May her legacy of God's goodness and love live through her family and friends.

God bless you all, Katrina (Trina) Stafford White

My heart is so sad that my dear friend (cousin) Bobbie has left us but my heart is full of praise to know that she is with our Lord and her loved ones. May God give you strength and comfort your hearts during this hard time of loosing a loved one and the days to follow. She was so proud of her family. Love to all of you!!

I had not had the chance to know Mrs. Martin personally, but was acquainted with her by talking with her on the telephone many times.

She had a lovely voice and was so kind. She made one feel like she had known you for years.

May you rest in peace, Mrs. Martin. God has another angel in Heaven.

To Bobby's daughters, You may not remember me, I worked at the hospital and gave your mother sour dough bread.
I hate to hear that Bobby has passed, but we all know that she is in a better place. Bobby was such an inspiration with her spirit and her positive attitude.
We are all better for knowing her. Thoughts and prayers for you all!

Bobbie was a precious lady who served in so many ways. I first met Bill, Bobbie and the little girls in Jaycees in Narrows so many years ago. Girls, your mother set a wonderful example for you all with her life. You all were wonderful students in class. She worked tirelessly in the church serving others. May you take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with your Dad and her parents. May you also be comforted in knowing that she left you all a great legacy and that so many loved her. May God's grace comfort you and may the knowledge that others love you and your family make this difficult time a little easier

Bobbie, I will always remember you as a dear Godly woman that served the Lord from the time that I first met you. You were very precious to me, and I will never forget you. I know that you and Bill are singing with the angels tonight. I love you and with God's grace I will see you again one day.

"Bobbie" set a great example of faith and trust in God. That example will live on in the lives of her beautiful girls, Christie and Cherie. And, will be thought of many times as it offers encouragement and perseverance for friends as they continue their journey. Thank you, Bobbie, for what all you meant to us. You are a precious, precious soul!
