Hazel Wheeler Akers, 92 of Narrows, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 10th, 2016, after a long life well lived.

She was born in Narrows on May 15th, 1923, and was the daughter of the late William H. and Nora Lake Lambert Wheeler. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Henry Arthur Akers; a son, Phillip Tyler Wheeler; ten brothers, Edgar Wheeler, Earnest Wheeler, Leonard Wheeler, Thomas Wheeler, John Wheeler, Paul Wheeler, Samuel Wheeler, Ray Wheeler, Clifford Wheeler and Carl Wheeler; and two sisters, Wava Testerman and Bonita Roatenberry.

A faithful servant of Christ, Hazel was a lifelong member of Kathleen Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a retired employee of Celanese in Narrows with 28 years service. She enjoyed reading, gardening, quilting, and cooking for her family. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, she will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

Left to cherish her memory are three sons, Larry Akers and wife Elizabeth of Pembroke, Mark Akers and wife Donna of Narrows, Stanley Akers and wife Elaine of Narrows; three daughters, Linda Whisman and husband Dink of Roanoke, Sarah Hyatt of Narrows, Rebecca Epling and husband Jeffrey of Rich Creek; ten grandchildren, Laura, Thomas, Chelsey, Chastin, Ethan, Daniel, Kristen, Erin, Paula, and Madison; six great-grandchildren, Zac, Mollie, Kelly, Jackson, Easton, and Raegan; two great-great grandchildren, Parker and Cooper; three special sisters-in-law, Shirley Wheeler, Janet Wheeler, and Iris Wheeler; two special nieces, Dr. Pat Pinson and husband, Dr. Ernest Pinson, and Frances Smith; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 13th, 2016 at 3 PM in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Chapel Sunday from 1 PM until just prior to the service.
